Biking for Groceries

February 7, 2010

I rode the Electra Townie up to Sprouts grocery store today. We are lucky enough to have a Sprouts, Natural GrocersWhole Foods, and HEB Central Market nearby, was well as some more traditional grocery stores. Sprouts is the groovy store that is closest to us – an easy 1.75 mile ride through the neighborhood.

My mission tonight was simply to buy stuff to eat for lunch next week, plus a few other items. Stuff to make smoothies, etc. Sprouts has fairly good prices. The one thing about these stores that still kind of bothers me is that they still sell products that are way over-packaged. Like a small package of baby spinach — it was in a clear plastic container that was just too much for the product. So much waste. No – I didn’t buy that stuff. I’d just like to see retailers insist on packaging that provides less crap to potentially go to the landfill.

It is also very hard for me to buy lettuce and spinach now. Last year we had so much from our square foot gardens — it was great. This year, due to my dad’s illness in 2009, we didn’t have any time to do the gardens. So I’m used to getting really good leafy greens for nearly free. Hard to pay grocery store prices.

Anyway, even though it was a bit cold it was nice to ride the bike to the store.  It has been too long.

Dallas Bike Trail Network

February 5, 2010

Here is a good article on the bike trail network in Dallas, from a new blog called Biking in Dallas.

These guys are running a good blog. Lots of great information here. I was really happy to see that they gave big props to my town of Richardson in the above-linked article.

Revisiting Manufacturing Consent

February 5, 2010

I just finished watching Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media. I saw the film back in 1992 when it was released, and was quite impressed.

The film holds up quite well. I would love to see an update done that accounts for 1)the increasing concentration of major media power as well as the blatant propaganda of Fox News (as opposed the more subtle propaganda of the other major TV networks), 2)the growth of conservative talk radio, and 3)the growth of the internet — is it a democratizing force or simply a source of intellectual clutter? Or somewhere in between.

It is very cool to see this film so many years later, and see the stacks and stacks of papers in Chomsky’s office, the small alternative press operations in the film, etc.

Note: I downloaded this film from iTunes. I understand it is available for free on Google video. iTunes has the release date as 2002, which is incorrect. It was released in 1992 — thus the lack of any mention of the internet.

Another note: I have to admit that I have not read the book. The book deals with the subject of the media only, while the film also does some biographical stuff about Chomsky. Understandable, since one would want a new audience to at least have some idea who the man is.

Yes, I still live.

February 1, 2010

It has been a while without any posts. The last couple of months (the last year, really) have been tough. Family illness prevented me from really tending my gardens, practicing aikido, doing much skateboarding, etc. However, I was doing what I wanted to be doing more than anything — helping — so it is all good. In that last couple of months, however, I have gotten back to aikido practice, and I’m getting ready to get the gardens ready for Spring. And I’ve been skating a bit too.

I am preparing for my 4th kyu test at aikido, coming on Feb. 20.

More blog entries will follow.
